How to Improve pagespeed of your blog – step by step guide part-2

As I have mentioned in the previous post. This post is going to be step by step guide to show how to improve pagespeed of your blog.

1.Improve your server speed

Choose your hosting service provider efficiently. Make sure you choose a good server with great speed to make the response quicker. I will keep this simple since it’s a factor which you don’t have much control. So don’t go for the cheap hosting servers with slowness.

2.Compress your images:

Most of the blogs have a good amount of images. Even though you might think they take very less space. When comes to speed they became a great influencing factor in it.

How to compress your images?

You can compress your images and scale it manually using design tools or else you can do as I did for this blog. I have done a quick search on image compressing plugins on WordPress and found this amazing plugin which will take care of your image compression problem.

It’s very simple. Install it and go to the plugin setting page. Once you installed, it will automatically smush the new images as you upload. For old images, you should give bulk smash in the setting page.

As simple as that, congratulations you have made all your images compressed and optimized.

3.Minify your CSS/JS:

Most of the plugins and themes you have will have style file with extension .css. In most cases, it might be a difficult job to find out all the files and compress it, if you are a non-techy person. However, there are few places where you can go and make the change all by yourself.

There are plugins to compress your css which will be latered cover on. In case you have minimal theme as like me, you can go ahead to Appearence->Editor->style.css.

Quite a bit of improvement. But it can be even more improved. Let’s go on.

4.Enable Caching

Caching (pronounced “cashing”) is the process of storing data in a cache. A cacheis a temporary storage area. For example, the files you automatically request by looking at a Web page are stored on your hard disk in a cache subdirectory under the directory for your browser

By enabling caching will avoid request often and serve the stored files. It gives a great amount of improvement in your performance since requests are getting avoided at the second time.

How to enable caching?:

There are two plugins i have tried.

Plugin Name: WP Super Cache

Plugin Name: WP fast cache

Bot perform great. While Super Cache has the more advanced function which might not require all the time. I stick with minimal version plugin wp fast cache.

So just go ahead install the plugin and the settings are self-explanatory. You can easily configure it.

After I done caching:

What else can be done?

  • CDN SUPPORT
  • FONT-FILE LOCALIZATION

Which i am not ready to implement now. So avoided it for now. That are the only two things which i can improve more on this blog.

Page speed is often confused with “site speed,” which is actually the page speed for a sample of page views on a site. Page speed can be described in either “page load time” (the time it takes to fully display the content on a specific page) or “time to the first byte” (how long it takes for your browser to receive the first byte of information from the web server).

No matter how you measure it, a faster page speed is better. Many people have found that faster pages both rank and convert better.
